It’s time to get to know us a little better! In this two part series, we will get to know the sisters behind the scenes at little seed knits!
First up, Nicole!
Tell us about yourself….
Hello! My name is Nicole. In addition to being an avid knitter and creator of awesomeness at little seed knits, I am an aspiring yoga teacher and a human resources professional. I live in Ajax with my fiance, Stephen, and our two cats, Bruce and Alfie (who often make an appearance in our photos). I love tea, coffee, wine, chocolate, candy, popcorn, movies, t.v., crafts, yarn, books, essential oils, yoga, kittens, sunshine and nature.
How long have you been knitting?
I first learned how to knit when I was about 10 years old. I knitted on and off throughout my teens and early twenties but I never got very far. I found patterns very confusing. About 3 years ago, I decided to pick it up again and I haven’t put down my needles since! This time around I found Google and YouTube invaluable resources to help me whenever I was stuck.
What was your first project?
Like most knitters, my very first project was a scarf. When I picked knitting back up again a few years ago, I made a purple pillow cover, which we still use in the living room!
Why did you decide to start knitting?
I always liked knitting but got frustrated when I couldn’t do more than knit a scarf (and even that didn’t turn out very well). I’ve always enjoyed creative activities, such as drawing, crafts, and painting. When I picked it up this time around, I found it was a great way to unwind and use my brain in a different way.
What is your favourite thing to knit?
I love knitting hats! They are usually pretty quick to knit, especially if using a bulky yarn. I like to knit things that I can finish quickly so I can feel that sense of accomplishment. I also love that there are so many ways to make a hat unique! I am also really into sock yarn right now so I am learning how to do socks! Sock yarn comes in so many amazing patterns and colours!
What colour yarn do you always seem to buy?
I love purple! I always seem to end up with purple yarn. I often break my own knitting cardinal rule – do not buy yarn without a pattern! I can’t resist beautiful yarn.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you first started knitting?
I wish I had learned to “read” my knitting. I think it is important to be able to understand what you’ve done, especially if there is a mistake. Also, learning how to fix mistakes would have been great to learn sooner. I have frogged many projects that I probably could have just undone the mistake if I had known how to do it properly.
How many projects are you currently working on?
A blanket for our bedroom, a shawl and a pair of socks for myself; a baby cardigan, a baby blanket and some winter accessories for our first craft show in December!
What is the next project you’d like to attempt?
I’d like to try a sweater pattern! I have only done one top before but it turned out too short and boxy. I have a couple of cute patterns that I am planning to attempt this winter.
When you’re not knitting, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I love to read; right now I am reading Yoga Sutras of Patanjali for my yoga teacher training course and the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I also love watching movies (although I am often knitting at the same time)! I will pretty much watch anything from any genre, except horror films, which really aren’t my cup of tea.
Oh, did I mention I have two adorable cats? 😛
