Love Hearts Hat (Free Pattern)

Free Pattern!

I designed this simple hat in red and white in celebration of Canada's 150 Birthday back in 2017 and called it the Love Canada Hat! As the summer cooled down, I decided to make some more hats in other cozy colours for the fall and winter. Now, in celebration of Canada Day 2019, I want to share it with you. Great for an advance beginner wanted to start making hats.

Skills required: cast on, knitting in the round,  k1p1 ribbing, decreasing,

Level: Easy, Advance Beginner

Yarn: Any bulky weight yarn, in two contrasting colours (I used Loops and Threads Charisma). Colour A - main; Colour B, secondary

Needles: 6 mm and 8 mm, 16 inch round needles

Other tools: darning needle, stitch marker (optional)

With 6 mm needles, cast on 56 stitches in Colour A, using your favourite cast on style - see note below. Place a stitch marker to mark the end/beginning of the round (optional).

R1-5 - K1 P1 (ribbing for brim)

R6-8 - Switch to larger needles and knit all rounds.

R9 - knit one round in Colour B

R10- one round in Colour A

R11 - k1 Colour A, k1 Colour B* repeat to end of the round (this creates what looks like a little heart shape on every other knit stitch)

R12 - one round Colour A

R13 - one around Colour

B R14 - continue knitting all rounds in Colour A until the piece measures approximately 5 inches

K5, k2tog* repeat to end

Finishing: Cut a tail, leaving about 5 inches of yarn, and weave through the remaining stitches using tapestry needle and pull tight.

Weave in ends using tapestry needle.

Optional:  Attach a pom pom in Colour B to the top, making sure to secure it tightly.

We prefer the long tail cast on method. Very Pink Knits on YouTube has a great video on how to do this cast-on.
